Friendship evangelism – what’s good about it? What’s heretical?

5 June 2012 3 Comments

The concept of “Friendship Evangelism” dominates the evangelism landscape in the Western Church, particularly NZ.

What’s good about it and should be retained? What’s not so good?  What should we dump as outright heresy?

Absolutely right Julian, we cannot communicate the words of the GOSPEL by simply being a friend.
JESUS said HE would send the HOLY SPIRIT who would testify of HIM, and that we also will be HIS witnesses to the world.
If I am correct the words “witness” is a legal word. A witness was someone who stood in the court and told of the birth, death and resurrection and the meaning of those events.
Therefore we need to have a pretty accurate knowledge of Him to do this.
We cannot be effective witnesses to this by being a friend alone. At some point we must speak the words of the GOSPEL. To do so is to evangelise.
The HOLY SPIRIT has come to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgement. If we are filled with the HOLY SPIRIT then we will be compelled to speak that which the HOLY SPIRIT longs to speak (i.e. sin, righteousness and judgement), otherwise it could be said that the HOLY SPIRIT is not in us or even worse we are quenching the HOLY SPIRIT, which we are commanded not to do.

    Sorry, sin, righteousness and judgement

  • Julian Batchelor says:

As usual, you are right on Bruce.. well said.
